The election program of his PVV party, however, tells a different story. It includes such statements as: "Asylum seekers feast at the splendid free buffets of cruise ships, while Dutch families have to save on food." The program proposes a ban on Islamic schools, the Koran, and mosques and wants to ban headscarves from government buildings.

Furthermore, the party aims to follow the UK's example and hold a "mandatory referendum" on a "Nexit" - the Netherlands' exit from the EU. In terms of foreign policy, the party's election program echoes former US President Trump and proclaims "Netherlands first", mirroring Trump's "America first" slogan.

France's right-wing populist Marine Le Pen congratulated Wilders and his party on the "spectacular" result, which in her words "confirms the growing support for the defense of national identities", as she stated on online service X, formerly known as Twitter.

Hungary's right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban also congratulated Wilders and wrote on X about a "wind of change".

The election was necessary after the coalition of long-time Prime Minister Mark Rutte collapsed in early July over a dispute about immigration policy. Shortly afterwards, the prime minister surprisingly announced his withdrawal from politics.
