At the Munich Security Conference last February, US General and NATO Commander Christopher Cavoli cited modern long-range missiles alongside F-16 fighter jets as prerequisites for a possible victory of Ukraine over Russia. Ukraine has so far received only short-range weapons
However, the US has so far declined to deliver ATACMS missiles to Ukraine, expressing concerns about an escalation of the Ukraine conflict if Russian territory were to be directly attacked. According to The New York Times, the US government is internally considering the delivery of this missile defense system to Ukraine. The newspaper cites three officials from the US and Europe who report on a "quiet debate within the Biden administration" and are considering delivering a few ATACMS missiles into the war zone. In addition to fears of an expansion of the Ukraine conflict, the limited quantity is also a reason why US President Joe Biden has so far rejected the delivery of this weapon system to Ukraine. US military circles have pointed out that the arsenal of ATACMS missiles is relatively small and the missiles are intended for other military plans of the Pentagon. Reportedly, only about 4,000 of these long-range missiles were produced by Lockheed Martin. Passing them on to Ukraine could jeopardize readiness in other potential crisis areas.
