On Saturday, the Houthis are said to have shelled an oil tanker flying the American flag in the Gulf of Aden, as Houthi spokesman Yahya Sarea announced in a television address. The militia fired marine rockets at the tanker MV Torm Thor. The USS Mason fired a ballistic anti-ship missile, which was likely targeting the tanker, however, neither the ship nor the USS Mason were damaged. A week ago, the Houthis claim to have attacked a freighter in the Bab al-Mandab Strait at the southern entrance to the Red Sea with rockets. They claim to be acting in solidarity with Hamas and are targeting ships with alleged Israeli connections off the Yemeni coast.
Militaries Aim to Protect Ships
The Red Sea is one of the most important shipping routes for world trade as it connects the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal in Egypt. The USA and the UK have repeatedly targeted the Houthis in Yemen. This is already the fourth joint operation against the militia by the two countries since January 12.
