During her campaign, Harris failed to clearly distinguish herself from Biden's political style. In an interview with "The View," she merely indicated that she would include a Republican in her administration and could not name any specific differences to Biden. Towards the end of her campaign, she mainly focused on warning about a second term of Trump, whom she repeatedly sharply criticized. However, according to Republican pollster Frank Luntz, this was a mistake: The electorate is already familiar with Trump's controversial views, while Harris did not outline a clear agenda for her own presidency.
Simmons emphasizes that a short-term tenure of Harris would be significant for future female candidates, as it would lower the "historic hurdle" for women in the presidency. This would make it easier for a future president to assume the role without the pressure of being the first woman in the highest office of the U.S. In addition, Harris as interim president would also symbolically influence Trump's impending inauguration. "Trump would have to reprint his fan merchandise," Simmons added jokingly, referring to the symbolism that Trump would not immediately go down in history as the 47th president.
