It's a broken campaign promise that is causing a stir right at the beginning of US President Donald Trump's term in office. Only one day after his inauguration, the war between Russia and Ukraine in Eastern Europe is continuing unabated - and this was a key promise of Trump's!
Trump had announced during his election campaign that he would quickly put an end to the bloodshed. In July of the previous year, he stated, "They are dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I will do that - within 24 hours." Yet even 24 hours after taking office, the conflict in Ukraine is still unresolved. In response to a reporter's question about whether he did not want to "end the Russia-Ukraine war on his first day in office", Trump reacted with a casual comment: "It's only been half a day. I still have time. We'll see." However, at the end of his first day in office, it is clear: The war and violence in Ukraine continue.
