Blaine (Minnesota) - A shocking incident has shaken the United States: Former Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, Democrat Melissa Hortman, and her husband were targeted and killed in a political attack at their home. In a separate attack, Democratic Senator John Hoffman and his wife were severely injured.
Minnesota's Governor Tim Walz, speaking at a press conference, described the incident as a "targeted political act" and appealed to the public: "We all - in Minnesota and across the country - must stand firmly against any form of political violence. Those responsible will be held accountable." The attacks took place early Saturday morning in two suburbs north of Minneapolis – apparently well coordinated. According to investigators, the alleged perpetrator posed as a police officer to gain access to the homes. He used a vehicle disguised as a police car, exploiting the trust symbolized by uniforms. During a subsequent confrontation with the police, he opened fire and managed to escape.
"He shamelessly exploited the trust in law enforcement," said Security Chief Bob Johnson. The suspect is described as a white male with brown hair, dressed in black protective gear over a blue shirt and blue trousers. Authorities warn that he may continue to pose as a police officer.
