Manifesto Reveals Deadly Intentions
Upon searching the alleged escape vehicle, investigators found a manifesto in which several officials were named. Both Hortman and Hoffman were explicitly listed as potential targets. In response, security agencies have initiated additional protective measures for individuals on the list. Authorities are urging the public to be cautious: "Do not open the door if a single police officer is in front of it. Verify the officer's identity via emergency call if you are unsure." While Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in their home in Brooklyn Park, John Hoffman and his wife survived the attack in Champlin but are currently undergoing medical treatment. Hortman had been active in parliament since 2004, most recently as the Democratic Party leader. Hoffman has been a senator and political advisor since 2012.
Trump Condemns the Act
US President Donald Trump (79) strongly condemned the fatal shootings, labeling the act as a "likely targeted attack on public servants." The FBI and Attorney General Pam Bondi have been tasked with the investigation. A White House statement read: "Such cruel violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America." Trump announced that all those involved in the act would be prosecuted "with the full force of the law." The political climate in the U.S. has been extremely polarized for years, with potentially life-threatening consequences for officeholders and their families. The recent events in Minnesota mark a new, deadly level of this spiral of violence. The double murder of Melissa Hortman and her husband, as well as the shootings of Senator Hoffman and his wife, once again demonstrate the dangerous radicalization in parts of society.
