Although tornadoes are rare in this region, they are not entirely impossible, especially in autumn. When cold air masses from the north meet warm and humid sea air, extreme weather phenomena can form. These conditions favor the emergence of tornadoes, which can cause immense damage within a very short time. Such an event occurred in November 2012 when a tornado with wind speeds of up to 270 kilometers per hour swept across the Algarve. At that time, the storm left a trail of destruction about 300 meters wide, destroyed houses, and injured 13 people. The recent incident sadly reminds us of this natural disaster and once again shows how dangerous such weather phenomena can be.
The tornado hit the tourist-favorite city of Albufeira on the southern coast of Portugal. Especially here, where numerous visitors from abroad vacation every year, the risk is particularly high when natural forces strike. The images of destruction and the tragic consequences of the storm serve as a stark reminder of the importance of being better prepared for such extreme weather events. The clean-up work has already begun, but the events will occupy the region for a long time. For the victims and their families, the storm remains a painful experience that they will not forget anytime soon.
