To this day, science does not know a clear cause. Some affected people had previously undergone radiation therapies, others suffer from genetic syndromes or severe lymphatic drainage disorders. Certain chemicals like arsenic are considered risk factors – but in many cases, the trigger remains a mystery. Angiosarcomas can become visible on the skin – or grow deep within the body without being detected immediately. Symptoms include sudden, reddish or blue-red skin spots, flat, slightly raised discolorations that rapidly enlarge and later swellings or even bleeding nodes. They often appear on the lower leg, in the head-neck region or on the arms. However, if the tumors grow in organs, the symptoms are significantly more non-specific:

Weakness, abdominal pain, blood in the urine or severe sciatica can be initial indications.

Treatment – the future steps

Doctors typically remove the tumor surgically – as thoroughly as possible, but without unnecessarily sacrificing much healthy tissue. This is often followed by radiation or chemotherapy. The exact treatment depends on the tumor, its location, and the patient's health condition. Angiosarcomas are extremely rare – and unfortunately particularly aggressive. Many are detected late because the symptoms in the early stage are hardly noticeable. The survival probability depends heavily on the size of the tumor, its location, and the treatment options. A general prognosis is hardly possible. Each case is individual – including that of Thomas Gottschalk.
