A Hollywood ascent

Born in Philadelphia, Kelly trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and broke into film in 1951. She earned acclaim in High Noon and Mogambo, starred in Hitchcock classics such as Dial M for Murder, Rear Window and To Catch a Thief, and won the 1955 Academy Award for Best Actress for The Country Girl.

The Cannes encounter that changed everything

While at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival she met Prince Rainier of Monaco after an introduction by Olivia de Havilland. Their courtship included mishaps and a second meeting at Christmas 1955 that quickly led to an engagement announced at her parents' home in January 1956.
